Swainson's thrush        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Swainson's thrush is a migrant throughout California and a common breeder in parts of the state, and also breeds in much of the northern parts of North America   It looks a lot like other thrushes (such as the hermit and gray-cheeked thrush) but usually can be identified by a prominent buffy eye-ring.   Some of these were photographed in migration at Big Morongo Reserve in the southeastern desert; the others were at the mouth of the Big Sur River (both in California), or near Anchorage, Alaska.
