Red-crested cotinga        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Some cotingas (like the famous cock-of-the-rock), are brilliantly colored, but this one is rather plain except for the red crest -- usually well-hidden and barely visible in one of these images.   These rather calm -- but distant -- birds were photographed in cloud forest near Waqecha Research Station, at about 3000 m elevation on the east slope of the Peruvian Andes.
