Golden-fronted woodpecker        Images © Mark A. Chappell

In the United States, golden-fronted woodpeckers are a Texas specialty (the range extends into Oklahoma), although they are quite common in many places (such as the lower Rio Grande Valley, where I found these).   Both sexes are colorful, with yellowish belly patches, yellow foreheads, orangy hind-necks, but males also have a red cap.
