Crimson-mantled woodpecker        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The Neotropics have many spectacular species, and this small one is a good example.   Crimson-mantled woodpeckers are named for their bright red backs, but they are prettily marked all over the body.   This one was photographed at Wayqecha Station, at about 3000 m elevation on the Manu Road in eastern Peru.   This area is wet cloud forest and the photos were taken looking up against an overcast sky.
