Broad-billed hummingbird        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Broad-billed hummingbirds have a limited range in the US (mostly southern Arizona) but they are abundant and conspicuous where they occur.   The males are spectacular little birds, with even more glittery irridescense than most hummingbirds.   Even the females (on nest) are more colorful than most female hummers.   The species is named for the broad bill base, visible in the male below).   I photographed the males in Patagonia and Madera Canyon, Arizona; the female was nesting near Tucson, Arizona.
