The kingfisher in most of these images is a female, identified by the rusty belly-band.   She was a real treat to photograph because most belted kingfishers are extremely shy, but this bird tolerated a fairly close approach in my car.   The location was the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside, California   More images of this species are on this page..
