Wild turkeys        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Wild turkeys are native to much of North America, although in many places they were exterminated and then re-introduced.   I did not expect to see any at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, but during a late November visit I encountered a confiding group feeding among pine trees; most of the images on this page are of these birds.   The male, or 'Tom', was identifiable from his somewhat larger size, brighter colors, and 'beard' on the chest.   The feather patterns were from a bird in south Texas that wandered VERY close to my hide.
The flock of turkeys at the bottom of the page were wandering across an open field at the Konza Prairie research area near Manhattan, Kansas.   When we stopped the car to take this photo, they wandered considerably faster -- even in this protected reserve, turkeys remain very wary birds (thanks to my friend Dave Rintoul for vast patience).
