Scaled quail        Images © Mark A. Chappell

I've always been intrigued by scaled quail.   They have interesting subtle markings and are found in dry areas of the American southwest (but not in California, where I live).   These were photographed in southern Texas, coming to a feeding station.  Unfortunately they were quite shy and did not get close enough for good, tight shots; these images are considerably cropped from the originals.  I hope to get better ones someday.
