Ruddy ground-dove        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Ground doves of various kinds occur from the southern US into South America; all are small, plump, short-tailed doves that spend a lot of time on the ground.  This is the ruddy ground-dove, which is mostly tropical but sometimes strays into the American southwest.   Males are slightly more brightly colored than females.   These were photographed in Cali, Colombia and in Patagonia, Arizona.
