Greater prairie-chicken        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Like sage grouse, prairie chickens have a lek-based mating system in which males put on spectacular displays on special small territories in an attempt to interest females. Greater prairie-chickens breed in early spring in the Great Plains of central North America. This male was attending a lek on the Konza Prairie near Manhattan, Kansas. I photographed him from a blind, guided by my fellow birder Dave Rintoul.
