Mountain quail        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The mountain quail is a shy, brush-loving species that has proven very challenging to me to obtain good images.   Usually I see them at a distance as they scurry into cover, or they explode into flight from under my feet when I least expect it.  This isn't a very good photo, but it's the best I've been able to do.   This bird was accompanying a covey of large chicks on Convict Creek in the eastern Sierra Nevada of California, and it paused just long enough for a couple of 'record' shots.
