Mountain quail        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The mountain quail is a shy, brush-loving species that has proven very challenging to me to obtain good images.   Usually I see them at a distance as they scurry into cover, or they explode into flight from under my feet when I least expect it.  These are not very good photos, but are the best I've been able to do.   The two quail were at the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Lab (Mono County) and near Santa Rosa Peak (Riverside County), both in California.   Both paused just long enough for a single exposure.
