Northern hawk-owl        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Northern hawk-owls are medium-sized, fast-flying, rather confiding birds from northern boreal forests, much sought-after by birdewatchers from the US. They occasionally move southward during severe winters. I photographed this one near Churchill, Manitoba, in late June. Mosquitoes were out in force and both the owl and the photographer were much bothered by them.
