Common ground-dove        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Common ground-doves are small, fast-walking doves with a short tail, a 'scaly' breast pattern, and a rusty tinge to the flight feathers.   They are found in the southern US; these birds were in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and (the pale bird) the Imperial Valley of California.
