Lapwing        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Lapwings are big, flashy, noisy 'dry land' plovers from Europe and Asia.  They are fond of pastures, meadows, and other open spaces, where in spring they often engage in display flights, producing a weird, electronic-sounding call.   Most lapwings are rather shy; this cooperative individual was photographed from a car near the village of Zajky, in northeastern Poland.
