Common snipe        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Various species of snipe are found across the globe; all are short-legged wading birds with very long bills.   Most have elaborate mating displays, including acrobatic evening flight.   This is the common snipe of Europe, and the pictures were taken near Bialowieza, Poland and in the nearby Biebrza National Park.  Its close relative in North America is Wilson's snipe.
