The resting birds in the pictures above are all royal terns.   The one at left is in winter plumage, with a whiteish crown and orange bill, and the one at right is in fresh breeding plumage with a jet-black cap and a more blood-red bill.   These birds were on the beach just north of the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego, California; another was at Crystal Cove State Park, a bit to the horth.   The royal terns at sunset and the terns in the last two pictures were photographed on Honeymoon Island, near Tarpon Springs, Florida.   Go to these pages for pictures of royal terns in flight, resting elegant terns, courting elegant terns in flight, Forster's terns, least terns, and Caspian terns,
