Rhinoceros auklet        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Rhinoceros auklets are blackish alcids with white bellies and a horn-like structor at the base of the bill.   In breeding season they sport white plumes on the head; some of these birds show traces of them.   The species nests in burrows or cavities on islands off of western North America and northeastern Asia.   These were photographed in Monterey Bay, California.
