Gull-billed tern        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Gull-billed terns are medium-sized terns with heavy black bills that more closely resemble the bills of gulls than those of typical terns.   They often feed on land, catching insects and sometimes small lizards   Where I live in southern California, they are usually seen on the coast or at the Salton Sea and are rare inland.   These two were photographed in April at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside, California.   They did not permit close approach so the images are strongly cropped.  Both birds show color bands indicating they were originally captured at the Salton Sea.   An out-of-focus American avocet is in the picture of the displaying tern.
