Black tern        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Black terns are small, long-winged marsh birds with smoky black plumage during the breeding season.  They nest in ponds and marshes in much of North America, migrating south for the winter.   Juveniles are white, gray, and black, and molting adults (like some of these birds) are often quite 'blotchy'.   I usually don't see many black terns where I live in southern California, but on a midsummer trip to the Salton Sea, dozens of these small terns were flying about the shoreline.   A near relative, the white-winged tern, is found in Eurasia.
