Ancient murrelet        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Ancient murrelets are named for their grayish backs, supposedly suggestive of an old person.   They live in the North Pacific, breeding in northeastern Asia and northwestern North America, migrating southward in winter.   This small flock was photographed in Monterey Bay, California.
