Yellow-footed gull        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The yellow-footed gull is a Mexican species that resembles the western gull, but has bright yellow feet.   Yellow-footed gulls are big birds, with dark 'mantles' and a noticeably large bill.   After breeding and during the heat of the summer, a few of them stray into southern California's Salton Sea, where they can feed on the abundant barnacles and introduced Tilapia fish.   I photographed most of these birds -- including a first-year gull with typical brown-streaked juvenile plumage -- on a warm July day on the north shore of the Sea (most of the photos were taken fairly early in the morning, before it got really hot).   One photo shows a yellow-footed gull with a California gull.
