Antarctic tern        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Antarctic terns very much resemble their northern relative, the Arctic tern, and the two species mingle during the Austral summer / Boreal winter, when Arctic terns migrate to the Southern Ocean. Antarctic terns breed on rocky outcrops and gravel patches around the Antarctic continent. These birds were near the U.S. research base at Palmer Station, off the Antarctic Peninsula.
