Wandering tattler        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The wandering tattler is a small gray rock-loving shorebird with a very evocative name.   They breed on streams in interior Alaska and northwestern Canada, but winter on rocky shores on the west coast of North and South America, and across the Pacific as far as Australia.   Although they are usually on rocks, they will venture onto sandy beaches to forage.   Most of the ones on this page are in fresh breeding plumage (nicely barred underneath); another is in the process of molting between the barred-bellied breeding plumage and the all-gray winter plumage.   The photos were taken near La Jolla and in coastal Orange County, both in southern California.
