Sanderlings are the quintessential beach birds, running before the waves in animated flocks along almost all of the coasts of the temperate and tropical Americas. They disappear from the south in the northern summer, moving up to the high Arctic to breed (attaining a very different rusty breeding plumage on the way). These birds were on beaches near Monterey and Crystal Cove State Park in California, and at Fort DeSoto Park near Tampa, Florida. Sanderlings in flight are shown on this page. |
