Short-billed dowitchers        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Short-billed dowitchers turn bright rusty-red in breeding plumage (usually seen only in the spring).   The ones above were busily feeding in the 'grainary ponds' near Churchill, Manitoba; I had to time the exposures to the brief intervals when they raised their heads for a look at me.   The photo below shows a flock of dowitchers in winter (taken at Newport Back Bay, coastal Orange County, California), or click here for more pictures of dowitchers in winter plumage.

This page shows dowitchers in flight.
