American wigeon        Images © Mark A. Chappell

American wigeon are common winter visitors to wetlands along the California coast.  These birds were photographed at the Newport Back Bay wildlife refuge or at nearby Bolsa Chica wetlands.   The males in the first three rows of images were in Socorro, New Mexico.   Occasionally a vagrant Eurasian wigeon will appear among large flocks of wintering American wigeons.   At the bottom of the page are some images of a male with an unusually pale head.

Another page shows American wigeons in flight.
