Long-tailed duck        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Long-tailed ducks (formerly called 'oldsquaws') are circumpolar in Arctic regions when breeding.   In winter they migrate somewhat to the south and spend their time on cold waters, both inland lakes and coastal ocean regions.   These were in unusually far south, in Orange County, California.   Images of summer-plumage birds are here.
