The male harlequin duck in many of these photos was at least briefly wintering in Stillwater Cove on the Monterey Peninsula, California.   The much more subdued-colored female was nearby on the Monterey Harbor breakwater.   Harlequins are small ducks that breed on fast-flowing streams and rivers; they are unusual this far south.  Pictures of other males are here.
