Hardhead        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Australian ducks are generally not particularly striking and the hardhead is no exception.   As someone from North America, they remind me of ring-necked ducks in behavior and shape (but are not as strikingly marked).   Males are a bit darker than females, but the sexes are more similar than in many other duck species.   These birds were in ponds in the city of Wollongong's botanical garden, on the southeast coast of NSW.
