Mexican duck        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Until fairly recently, the Mexican duck was considered to be a race of the ubiquitious mallard, but today most authorities consider them as a separate species.   Male Mexican ducks (shown in these photos) resemble female mallards with their subdued brown plumage, but have the banana-yellow bill of a male mallard.   These birds were swimming in a small canal at Bosque del Apache wildlife refuge in New Mexico.
