Andean duck (ruddy duck)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The Andean duck is very similar to (and is probably conspecific with) the ruddy duck familiar to North American birders.   It lacks the ruddy duck's white cheek patches, but is otherwise nearly identical in appearance and behavior.   These were on a small farm pond near Cusco, Peru.   The brownish bird is a female.
