Red-necked grebe        Images © Mark A. Chappell

These breeding red-necked grebes were photographed in several locations in south-central Alaska.  They vigorously defend their territories against waterbirds of many species, and often pairs would approach me closely, calling vigorously and displaying to each other and showing off their bright breeding plumage.   Others were taking care of stripe-faced chicks or incubating eggs in floating nests (below).   Many of the adults in these photos are losing the bright white cheek feathers of breeding plumage and exchanging them for the dark gray of winter plumage.   These photos were taken at Caswell Lake (south of Denali Park), Watson Lake (Kenai Peninsula), and Beluga Lake (in Homer).
