Limpkin        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Limpkins are large, stork-like relatives of rails and crakes that rely primarily on large aquatic snails for food.   They are fairly secretive and nocturnal and have strikingly loud calls.   This unusually confiding limpkin was photographed in the Corkscrew Swamp santuary in southwest Florida.
