Least grebe        Images © Mark A. Chappell

As their name implies, least grebes are the smallest grebes in North America.   They are really tropical birds and barely make it into the US in south Texas, but can be quite common there.   All of these birds are in winter plumage; in summer the adults have a neat black mask that offsets the staring yellow eyes.   Juveniles (bottom right) have striped heads, as is the case for many species of grebes.  The pictures were taken on overcast days on ponds in Brownsville and Edinburg, Texas.
