Double-crested cormorant        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The young double-crested cormorant in the upper left photo has just caught a small fish in the tidal waters of Bolsa Chica wetlands in coastal Orange County, California (as has the bird in the two images immediately below).   On the right and at the bottom of the page are adult birds in breeding colors, photographed in La Jolla, California; and at the portrait was made in Everglades National Park, Florida.   Another image was from the Salton Sea in southeastern California, where numbers of these birds overwinter and some breed.
