A breeding-plumage Brandt's cormorant shows filmy white plumes that appear only in late winter and spring, along with a bright blue throat pouch. Most of these pictures were taken at the 'Caves', on the coast in La Jolla, California. The breeding colony is on a rock just offshore of Pacific Grove, California.
