Black storm-petrel        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Black storm-petrels are the larger of the two common storm-petrels in Monterey Bay, California, where this bird was photographed.   The other is the ashy storm-petrel).   Black storm-petrels are larger and have a 'nighthawk-like' flight, while that of the smaller ashy storm-petrel is more bat-like.   Both species breed on islands off of California and Mexico.   A close relative is the Wilson's storm-petrel, an abundant breeder in Antarctica.
