American bittern

Bitterns sometimes allow close approach but in my experience they tend to hide quickly in dense vegetation or fly away.   The bird at right was in a wet meadow at Churchill, Manitoba.  Light was extremely dim and the stabilization feature of the Canon lens really helped as I aimed out of the car window.   The other bittern was at Bolsa Chica wetlands in coastal Orange County, California
