Like all loons, red-throated loons (called 'divers' in Europe) have a colorful breeding plumage (shown here) and a more subdued winter plumage. Their haunting calls, like those of common loons and Pacific loons, are familiar summer sounds on lakes in the far north. These were photographed in a small lake on the Glenn Highway in south-central Alaska. |
