Pacific heron

Pacific herons are medium-sized waders that are easily identified by their shiny dark dorsal plumage and the obvious white spots on the wing leading edges.   Herons are typically found in wetlands, but this species can be found throughout inland Australia, as long as some water is present.   It was always interesting to find them on small stock-watering reservoirs deep in the arid Outback.   These pictures were taken near such a pond at Fowlers Gap research station in the northwest corner of New South Wales.
