Long-tailed ducks

Long-tailed ducks (formerly called 'oldsquaws') are circumpolar in Arctic regions when breeding. In winter they migrate somewhat to the south and spend their time on cold waters, both inland lakes and coastal ocean regions. The summer-plumaged birds above were photographed near Churchill, Manitoba; the lovely black-and-white wintering ducks below (mainly males) were in Homer, Alaska.
