This large, showy, and graceful butterfly is common in spring and summer in many habitats in western North America.   These were sunbasking on aspen and cottonwood leaves in Long Valley, in eastern California's Mono County.   Another page shows the similar but less colorful pale swallowtail (P. eurymedon).
