White-lined sphinx moths (Hyles lineata) are common (sometimes extremely so) in the western United States. They feed on flower nectars, hovering like hummingbirds as they drink with their long, extensible tongues. I photographed this moth as it fed from Penstemon blossoms near Mammoth Lakes, California. |
