The morpho butterflies of Central and South America are famous for their brilliant metallic blue wings, but this color is confined to the upper wing surface. The ventral surface has an intricate camouflage pattern with eye spots, as shown in this individual photographed in Costa Rica. I used electronic flash in the dim light of the forest.
