Gray (common) hairstreak (Strymon melinus)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

This little butterfly had just emerged (I think) and was resting quietly in the shade, much more calmly than usual. It was photographed at the Salton Sea in southern California.   Like many butterflies, it perched with the wings tightly folded, making it difficult to get an image of the upper wing surface.
