Four-spotted skimmer (Libellula quadrimaculata)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Four-spotted skimmers are named for the four small black spots on the forewing; they also have a small black spot on the base of the hindwing, and intricate markings on the body.   I took the pictures with a long telephoto lens in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, and near Bishop, California.   For both, the sticks the dragonflies were sitting on were slowly waving around in the breeze, making focusing very difficult and most the images were unsharp.
