Emerald spreadwing (Lestes dryas)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The emerald spreadwing is a large damselfly with an extensive range across most of the Northern Hemisphere.   I took the pictures on a scrubby alkali flat near Bishop, California.   The day was quite windy and the long abdomens kept getting bent to one side, making a completely sharp image almost impossible.
