Black saddlebags (Tramea lacerata)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

The black saddlebags is named for the blackish saddle-shaped markings at the base of the hindwing, shown here mostly in closeup views of a freshly-eclosed individual; images of the whole dragonfly are on this page.   I took the pictures with a long telephoto lens at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area near Riverside, California.
