Band-winged meadowhawk (Sympetrum semicinctum)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Meadowhawks are a species-rich and often confusing group in North America (and elsewhere),   Like many dragonflies, the band-winged meadowhawk (AKA western meadohawk) shown here has considerable sexual dimorphism, with red-highlighted males and yellowish females.  It has orange-tinged wing bases but otherwise resembles several other species, including the sympatric black meadowhawk and the very common variegated meadowhawk.   These band-winged meadowhawks were photographed in Mono County, California (many thanks to Ron and Barbara Oriti, who showed us where to find them).
