California darner (Rhionaeschna californica)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

>The California darner is one of a confusing group of very similar dragonflies that are often lumped under the term 'mosaic darners.'   They resemble females of the more common blue-eyed darner but lack that species' broad strips in front of the wings.   I photographed this one near Laws in Inyo County, California (many thanks to Ron and Barbara Oriti for showing us this place, and others).
